Περίληψη

Israel/Palestine has been a hub of colonial conflicts and modern nationalisms, and has developed into one of the longest standing hotspots of conflict in recent history. Since the formation of the State of Israel and the 1948 Independence/Naqba war, dynamic social histories and extreme ethnic diversity have set the ground for the emergence of a unique culture, characterized best by its contradictions: modernity and tradition, secularism and religiosity, democracy and militarism, egalitarian ethos and socioeconomic inequalities. This course introduces students to an Israel/Palestine that is very different from the one portrayed in the mass media. Academic texts, modern literature, films, arts, food and music will also be presented and discussed so as to depict an insider's cultural picture of Israel's vibrant and complex society.

Course requirements:

1. There will be several (probably 6) small cultural  assignments intended for class discussion (such as preparing a map of Israel/Palestine, choosing an Israeli/Palestinian song which you like, choosing a site you would like to visit as a tourist , a dish you would like to try, reading a short novel etc). These will be fun assignments intended to familiarize you with the local culture (about 5% of the mark for each assignment).

2. There is a reading in English for each class (an article or a book chapter).

Each student will prepare one or two of the readings for class discussion (10% of the mark). Please read the articles before my arrivals, so that during my intensive weeks - you will only need to prepare your assignments and class discussions.

3. Final essay (in English or Greek) comparing one aspect of Israeli/Palestinian culture and society which we will discuss in class - to the Greek case. The paper is of 1500-1750 words (40%).

To make sure that you are in the right direction, you will submit a very short research proposal by the end my first stay (FEB 23), and present the first ideas you have in class during my second stay.

A bonus of up to 10% will be given to those who will present their final assignments in Greek to the faculty of the department.
