The M.A. Program Interdisciplinary Approaches in Historical, Archaeological and Anthropological Studies of the Department of History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology (IAKA) of the University of Thessaly was launched in the academic year 2004-5.
The curriculum of the Master's program is the outcome of many years of planning. The program is an extension and, at the same time, a broadening and a refinement of the interdisciplinary undergraduate program, building on the academic specializations of the faculty and addressing the challenges and priorities of contemporary scholarship and research. Graduate studies at IAKA aim to deepen students' disciplinary knowledge, with particular emphasis on emerging topics. The program cultivates interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration while maintaining the internal integrity of each discipline. A student's disciplinary specialization is determined by the seminars s/he takes and, in particular, the topic of the master's thesis.
The program of classes is enhanced by seminars, lectures, international conferences and academic meetings.
At regular intervals, the IAKA Department advertises openings for M.A. students in the fields of History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology (exams usually are held in September or February). Graduates of Greek universities or of foreign universities whose degree has been officially recognized by DOATAP are eligible to apply.
The selection of candidates is based on their performance on a written examination and in an interview, as well as on a consideration of the following:
Candidates take exams in one of the three academic fields of the M.A. program (History, Archaeology, Social Anthropology). Students, however, are not required to declare a particular field, if they do not wish. During the course of their studies, they can also change fields. Students who pass the written exams with a minimum grade of 6 (out of 10) are called for an interview in which they are asked questions related to the academic field in which they were tested. All students must have an adequate knowledge of at least two foreign languages in which there is an academic bibliography in their chosen field of specialization, one at least in an advanced level of competence (Proficiency). Nevertheless, students who lack proper documentation of their competence can demonstrate their knowledge through examination by the Department. Foreign students need to demonstrate their knowledge of Greek, either by procuring a certificate of competence in the Greek language or by examination. Candidates must have basic computer skills.
The duration of the M.A. Program is two academic years. The length of studies cannot exceed eight (8) semesters. In order to be awarded the M.A. Degree, students must complete:
Students applying to the Ph.D. program must already have a Master's (M.A.) degree (or analogous postgraduate degree) or a Ph.D. in another academic field. Students' research is overseen by a three-member committee, which can include professors at other universities in Greece or abroad. Students can defend their dissertation no less than three years after the date on which their topic is finalized.
